The strongest hummingbird garden is not built around one red flower. It provides nectar across as much of the year as the site can support.
Build a bloom sequence
Manzanitas can flower in winter; sages, currants and monkeyflowers can contribute in spring; California fuchsia is especially valuable later in the season.
Include insects and shelter
Hummingbirds also consume small arthropods, and shrubs or trees provide perching and nesting structure.
