How to Plant a Tree for Long-Term Success in Southern California

Successful planting starts before the hole is dug. Earth People LandCare uses a site-specific, organic approach built around the tree's root system, correct planting depth, drainage, irrigation, mulch and establishment care.

Start with the right tree and the right site

Match mature size, sunlight, wind and coastal exposure, heat, drainage, soil and available irrigation to the plant. A healthy nursery tree can still struggle when the site is wrong.

Find the root flare and avoid planting too deep

Inspect the root system before installation and establish the correct planting height. The trunk flare should not disappear beneath excess soil or mulch.

Dig for roots, not for amendments

Planting is site-specific. The hole should encourage roots to move outward into surrounding soil. Avoid automatically filling a planting hole with rich imported material that creates a sharply different root-zone environment. Compost, biology and other organic inputs should be prescribed according to the soil, species and site.

Build irrigation around the root zone

New trees need reliable establishment moisture without chronic saturation. Irrigation should account for soil infiltration, weather, tree size and the expanding root system. As the tree establishes, watering frequency and emitter placement may need to change.

Mulch correctly

Organic mulch can moderate soil temperature, reduce evaporation and support soil biology. Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk and root flare.

Use organic inputs with a purpose

Depending on the site, Earth People may recommend compost or topdress, worm castings, biological inoculants, organic nutrition, foliar or soil drenches and preventative organic pest management. More product is not automatically better; the goal is the right input at the right time.

Plan the first year before planting day

The first year should include irrigation checks, seasonal adjustments, inspection for stress and pests, structural guidance when needed and a plan for soil health. A tree is not finished when the crew leaves.
