Maintenance and placement matter
Dead material, continuous vegetation, plant spacing, distance from structures and surrounding fuels can matter as much as species choice. A plant considered lower-flammability can still burn under severe conditions.
California natives can still fit fire-conscious landscapes
The goal is thoughtful plant selection combined with appropriate spacing, pruning, litter management and irrigation where appropriate.
