Pollination compatibility
Many apple cultivars benefit from or require compatible pollen from another cultivar blooming at the same time. Some low-chill apples are particularly useful in Southern California.
Other causes
Poor bloom overlap, limited pollinator activity, weather during bloom, inadequate winter chill and tree stress can all influence fruit set.
