Avocado decline can begin below ground. Poor drainage, prolonged saturation and root pathogens can lead to thinning canopies, small pale leaves, wilt, leaf drop and branch dieback.
Water management matters
UC IPM notes that puddling, excessive irrigation and wetting trunks can increase root and crown disease risk. Correcting irrigation without understanding soil moisture can also make problems worse.
What to inspect
Look at drainage, emitter placement, watering frequency, root-zone moisture, mulch depth, trunk conditions and canopy density. Root problems should not be diagnosed from leaf appearance alone.
