Local storm preparation for Laguna Beach homes, gardens, driveways, and hillsides.

Flood Prevention & Erosion Control in Laguna Beach

Heavy rain can send water toward doors and garages, wash mulch and soil off slopes, clog drainage paths, and damage valuable landscapes. Earth People Landcare helps Laguna Beach homeowners prepare with site-specific landscape stormwater assessments, sandbag placement, straw wattles, surface runoff management, and preventive property care. We prioritize practical, water-wise solutions that work with your landscape.

Storm Preparation Services

Sandbag Placement & Flood Diversion

We assess vulnerable outdoor areas such as low entrances, garage approaches, and paths where runoff concentrates, then recommend and, where appropriate, place sandbags to help direct shallow surface water away. Sandbags are a temporary measure, not a guarantee against flooding or debris flows. Placement must not divert runoff onto neighboring properties or into unsafe locations.

Straw Wattles & Hillside Erosion Control

Straw wattles (also called fiber rolls) can help slow sheet flow, capture sediment, and keep soil and mulch from washing downslope when appropriately installed and secured. We can evaluate exposed garden beds, planted slopes, and disturbed landscape soil for suitable temporary erosion measures. Unstable slopes, landslide signs, retaining-wall failures, and engineered erosion work require qualified specialists.

Surface Drainage & Runoff Assessments

We look for blocked landscape drain inlets, standing water, overflowing planters, irrigation overspray, and areas where water travels toward structures. We can recommend landscape maintenance and drainage improvements, and identify when engineered drainage, excavation, permitting, or a licensed contractor may be necessary.

Pre-Storm Landscape Preparation

Before rain arrives, we can review vulnerable planting areas, check accessible landscape drainage features, identify exposed soil, and recommend temporary protection. Preparing early gives you more options than responding during hazardous conditions.

Who We Help

Homeowners with hillside gardens, sloped yards, vulnerable patios, low-lying driveways, landscaped retaining areas, and properties in Laguna Beach, South Laguna, North Laguna, Laguna Canyon, Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, and nearby South Orange County communities. Service scope and availability are confirmed after a property review.

How It Works

  1. Tell us the problem. Send your address or neighborhood, photos, and a description of where water or soil is moving.
  2. Get a property-specific recommendation. We review surface runoff, access, landscape conditions, and the appropriate temporary measures.
  3. Approve the scope. We confirm scheduling, materials, pricing, and any need for licensed drainage or engineering partners before work.

Laguna Beach Sandbags: What Homeowners Should Know

The City of Laguna Beach says that during anticipated heavy rain it may make filled sandbags available to residents on a self-serve, first-come basis, generally limited to 10 per property. Empty bags are available at city fire stations, but homeowners provide the sand. The City states it does not place sandbags for the public except in certain flooding situations involving city streets. City-provided sandbags are intended for eligible residents, not contractors. Check the City's current availability and rules rather than assuming bags will be ready for pickup.

Common Questions

Do you install sandbags in Laguna Beach?

Earth People Landcare can assess and quote appropriate private-property sandbag placement as part of storm preparation. Availability, material sourcing, and site conditions must be confirmed before scheduling.

What is a straw wattle?

A straw wattle is a long, cylindrical erosion-control roll placed and anchored along a slope or disturbed ground to slow surface runoff and help trap sediment. It helps with suitable surface erosion conditions; it does not stabilize a failing hillside.

Can straw wattles prevent a mudslide?

No. Straw wattles may reduce superficial sediment movement, but cannot prevent landslides or serious debris flows. If a hillside is cracking, bulging, actively moving, or threatening a structure, stay clear and contact the appropriate emergency authorities and a qualified geotechnical professional.

Can sandbags stop a flood?

Sandbags can help redirect some shallow surface water when correctly placed. They are not waterproof barriers and cannot reliably stop major flooding or debris flows.

When should I schedule erosion control?

Before forecast heavy rain. Early assessment allows time to identify drainage problems and arrange suitable materials, subject to safe working conditions.

What areas do you serve?

Laguna Beach and nearby South Orange County communities, including Dana Point and Laguna Niguel. Contact us to confirm your property is within the current service area.

Safety & Scope

We do not offer emergency rescue, floodwater entry, landslide stabilization, structural engineering, or guarantees against storm damage. Major drainage construction, grading, retaining walls, and regulated work may require permits and appropriately licensed contractors. If life or property is in immediate danger, call 911 and follow City evacuation instructions.
