Fruit & pollination
Partly self-fruitful; best crops with cross-pollination.
Check bloom overlap before choosing a partner. Chill estimates describe winter cooling, not frost hardiness; coastal and inland Orange County sites differ.
Understand your rootstock
A semi-vigorous apple rootstock producing a larger tree than M7 in many settings; valued for anchorage and adaptability, but still needs pruning and room to grow. The rootstock influences vigor and site adaptation but does not guarantee a specific mature height. Learn how fruit-tree rootstocks work.
Sun, soil & irrigation
Full sun, well-drained soil, consistent deep irrigation during establishment, dormant structural pruning, fruit thinning as needed, and monitoring for codling moth and fire blight.
Planting your bare-root tree
- Keep roots cool, shaded and moist until prompt planting.
- Spread roots naturally in a wide hole. Set the root flare at finished grade and keep any graft union above the soil.
- Backfill, water thoroughly and add mulch clear of the trunk. Avoid fertilizer-heavy backfill and waterlogged soil.
Your first year
Focus on roots and branch structure. Check moisture regularly, adjust irrigation with weather, remove rootstock suckers, and follow species-appropriate pruning and fruit-thinning guidance. Meaningful crops may take several growing seasons.
