Citrus usually needs less pruning than many deciduous fruit trees. The goal is generally to remove problems and manage structure without unnecessarily stripping away productive, protective canopy.
Good reasons to prune
Dead or damaged wood, problematic suckers, access conflicts and selected structural issues can justify pruning. Heavy canopy removal can expose bark and fruit to sunburn and stimulate vigorous regrowth.
Pest timing matters too
Repeatedly pruning leafminer-damaged citrus can stimulate tender flush that is attractive to additional leafminer activity.
