Eriogonum cinereum
A Southern California coastal buckwheat with ashy gray leaves and airy clusters of small flowers. Its spreading shape brings texture and habitat value to open native planting.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Sun to partial sun.
- Mature size: Generally 2–4 feet tall, spreading about 6 feet wide.
- Water & drought: Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation. Drought tolerant, with supplemental water adjusted to soil and inland heat.
- Soil: Adaptable soils with drainage; avoid prolonged saturation.
- Growth: Fast-growing evergreen shrub with an open, airy structure. Soft pink flowers are especially associated with summer, with bloom duration varying by site.
- Wildlife: Flowers provide resources for butterflies and other visiting insects.
- Maintenance: Lightly shape wandering branches and remove spent stalks when needed. Retain some seed heads for seasonal structure.
- Landscape uses: Coastal borders, broad slopes, mixed habitat beds and informal groundcover groupings. Allow its mature spread instead of confining it to a narrow edging strip.
