Festuca californica
An arching native bunchgrass that brings blue-green texture to woodland edges and naturalistic gardens. Its airy flowering stems rise above a distinct foliage clump.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Coastal sun or light shade. Favor afternoon shade in hotter inland gardens.
- Mature size: Foliage about 18 inches tall; flower stalks can reach 3–4 feet. Allow 2–3 feet of width.
- Water & drought: Water while roots establish, then use infrequent supplemental irrigation. Established clumps tolerate dry conditions.
- Soil: Adaptable, including draining clay; avoid stagnant wet soil.
- Growth: A perennial clump that enlarges over successive seasons, with spring–summer flowering stems. Growth varies with moisture and exposure.
- Wildlife: A host grass for some butterfly and moth larvae.
- Maintenance: Remove dead leaves and spent stalks selectively. Preserve its arching shape rather than mowing it as turf.
- Landscape uses: Meadow-style borders, lightly shaded slopes and oak-associated planting. Keep irrigation away from established oak trunks and avoid adding summer moisture that conflicts with oak health.
