Carex praegracilis
Fine-textured Field Sedge spreads into a soft, meadow-like cover. It can be left tousled or trimmed occasionally for a lower appearance, making it useful where an informal native lawn alternative is appropriate.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Sun to light shade.
- Mature size: About 1–2 feet tall; patches commonly occupy 2–3 feet or more and continue expanding.
- Water & drought: Some summer moisture maintains greener growth. Drought is tolerated, but plants can go dormant when too dry.
- Soil: Adaptable to clay and poorer soils; tolerates seasonal inundation.
- Growth: Freely spreading rhizomes form connected patches. Allow space or define an edge.
- Habitat: Butterfly and moth larval host; combine with flowering natives for nectar resources.
- Maintenance: Trim occasionally if a shorter appearance is desired. Control spread at borders and monitor summer moisture.
- Uses: Meadows, bioswales, erosion-control planting and suitable lawn alternatives.
