Eschscholzia californica var. maritima
A coastal perennial form of California poppy with finely divided blue-gray leaves and cheerful yellow to orange flowers. A good fit for sunny coastal gardens, open meadow planting and rock gardens.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Full sun for best flowering; tolerates some light shade.
- Mature size: Approximately 6–24 inches tall and 1–2 feet wide.
- Water & drought: Water during establishment, then reduce irrigation. Drought tolerant; occasional summer water can extend flowering.
- Soil: Provide drainage and avoid persistently saturated soil.
- Growth: Seasonal leafy growth and spring–summer flowers; bloom can continue longer in mild coastal conditions. Plants may retreat to leafy rosettes in winter and self-sow.
- Wildlife: Flowers provide pollen for bees.
- Maintenance: Remove spent stems as needed. Allow selected seed pods to mature for natural reseeding, or remove pods to limit volunteers.
- Landscape uses: Coastal borders, informal meadow mixes and spaces between rocks. Leave room for seasonal changes in appearance.
