Monardella villosa
Aromatic foliage and rounded pink-to-purple summer flower clusters make Coyote Mint a useful small perennial for native pollinator gardens. Give it an open position among rocks, meadow plants or low shrubs.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Sun; select exposure carefully in hot inland gardens.
- Mature size: Roughly 6–24 inches tall and 1–3 feet wide, depending on the plant and site.
- Water & drought: Drought tolerant once established. Establish roots with appropriate watering, then reduce irrigation for a dry native planting.
- Soil: Adaptable, including clay; avoid a persistently saturated crown.
- Growth: A low, spreading perennial; growth and flowering respond to season and site conditions.
- Pollinators & wildlife: Nectar flowers attract bees and butterflies; the species also serves as a butterfly and moth larval host.
- Maintenance: Tidy spent stems selectively after flowering and preserve healthy foliage.
- Uses: Rock gardens, meadow edges, low borders and pollinator planting.
