Berberis repens (syn. Mahonia repens)
A low evergreen shrub with blue-green, spiny-edged leaves, yellow spring flowers and blue-black fruit. Creeping Oregon Grape spreads into an informal groundcover and can develop bronze or purple foliage in cooler weather.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Sun to part shade; sheltered part shade is a useful choice in hotter gardens.
- Mature size: Usually 1–3 feet tall and 3–5 feet wide, expanding through spreading stems.
- Water & drought: Water during establishment. Established plants tolerate dry periods; occasional irrigation can support appearance in dry gardens.
- Soil: Adaptable, including clay; match watering to soil moisture.
- Growth: Low and colony-forming, spreading by underground stems.
- Pollinators & wildlife: Spring flowers support bees and butterflies; birds eat the berries.
- Maintenance: Remove damaged stems and selectively contain spreading growth. Keep prickly foliage away from narrow paths.
- Uses: Woodland edges, informal groundcover, mixed native borders and habitat plantings.
