Artemisia pycnocephala 'David's Choice'
A dense, silver-gray coastal perennial with soft, finely divided foliage. Best suited to mild coastal gardens, it brings texture to rock gardens, low borders and mixed native plantings.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Full sun is best; part sun is tolerated.
- Mature size: Roughly 1–2 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide; summer flower stalks rise above the foliage.
- Water & drought: Moderately drought tolerant. Infrequent summer irrigation can improve performance; avoid overhead watering into dense foliage.
- Soil: Well-drained soil; avoid wet crowns.
- Growth: Vigorous, low and dense. It can be short lived in cultivation, sometimes about 3–4 years.
- Habitat: Include as foliage cover in a varied native garden, with flowering companions for seasonal nectar.
- Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks. Monitor crown condition and plan for occasional replacement.
- Uses: Coastal borders, rock gardens and silver foliage accents. Hot inland sites are less suitable.
