Yellow-and-green variegated foliage gives this low evergreen California lilac year-round color. Its light blue spring flowers are a seasonal accent; foliage is the main feature.

Growing in Southern California

• Light: Coastal sun to part shade; provide light or afternoon shade in hotter inland locations.
• Mature size: About 6–12 inches tall and 3–6 feet wide.
• Water & drought: Drought tolerant once established, but occasional summer irrigation can improve performance. Hot inland sites may need more attention.
• Soil: Well-drained soil; match watering to drainage.
• Growth: Moderate, low and creeping.
• Pollinators & wildlife: Spring flowers support pollinators; a useful addition to mixed bird and butterfly gardens.
• Maintenance: Trim selectively to maintain boundaries while preserving its naturally spreading shape. Avoid forcing it into a narrow space.
• Uses: Groundcover, border fronts, low banks, containers and sheltered garden edges.
