True Foothill Sedge is a tufted evergreen native with arching, grass-like foliage. Use it for a soft understory layer or a loosely planted meadow, with room for its clumps to broaden.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Sun near the coast; part shade is generally preferable in hotter locations.
- Mature size: About 12–18 inches tall and 18–36 inches wide.
- Water & drought: Responds to occasional or moderate irrigation but tolerates periods of dryness once established. Match water to exposure.
- Soil: Adaptable, including clay; useful beneath suitable shrubs and trees.
- Growth: Tufted and slowly spreading through underground rootstocks.
- Habitat: A butterfly and moth larval host that adds low cover to diverse native plantings.
- Maintenance: Remove tired blades selectively and contain clumps where needed. Leave natural for an informal effect.
- Uses: Meadow planting, woodland understory, informal groundcover and soil stabilization.
