Sisyrinchium californicum
Golden-Eyed Grass pairs narrow, iris-like leaves with cheerful yellow flowers, often in late spring and early summer. Use this small California native perennial near a moist path edge, meadow planting or rain-garden margin.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Full sun near the coast; afternoon shade helps in hotter inland gardens.
- Mature size: Low foliage clumps are commonly about 8 inches tall and wide, with flower stems above the leaves.
- Water & drought: Prefers moist conditions and regular water inland. Established plants may tolerate some drying, but avoid treating it as an unirrigated dry-slope plant.
- Soil: Adaptable, including clay and alkaline soils; seasonal flooding is tolerated.
- Growth: Clump-forming; seasonal growth and flowering respond to moisture and exposure.
- Habitat: Add its small flowers and low foliage to diverse native meadow plantings.
- Maintenance: Remove spent stems and tired leaves selectively, preserving healthy foliage.
- Uses: Damp meadow edges, rain gardens, coastal borders and small spaces near irrigation.
