Fruit & pollination

Plant a compatible partner such as 20th Century, Bartlett, Shinko or Chojuro with overlapping bloom, as listed by Dave Wilson Nursery.

Check bloom overlap before choosing a partner. Chill estimates describe winter cooling, not frost hardiness; coastal and inland Orange County sites differ.

Understand your rootstock

A vigor-controlling pear rootstock, often about two-thirds standard size in nursery comparisons; tree size, anchorage and performance vary with variety and site. The rootstock influences vigor and site adaptation but does not guarantee a specific mature height. Learn how fruit-tree rootstocks work.

Sun, soil & irrigation

Full sun, well-drained soil; steady irrigation during fruit development, pruning for airflow and monitoring fire blight.

Planting your bare-root tree

  1. Keep roots cool, shaded and moist until prompt planting.
  2. Spread roots naturally in a wide hole. Set the root flare at finished grade and keep any graft union above the soil.
  3. Backfill, water thoroughly and add mulch clear of the trunk. Avoid fertilizer-heavy backfill and waterlogged soil.

Your first year

Focus on roots and branch structure. Check moisture regularly, adjust irrigation with weather, remove rootstock suckers, and follow species-appropriate pruning and fruit-thinning guidance. Meaningful crops may take several growing seasons.
