Abutilon palmeri
A warm-climate California native shrub with velvety gray-green leaves and golden to tangerine cup-shaped flowers. Its soft texture contrasts beautifully with buckwheats and other dry-garden plants.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Full sun to part shade.
- Mature size: Approximately 4–5 feet tall and wide.
- Water & drought: Irrigate during establishment, then water infrequently. Drought tolerant once rooted in.
- Soil: Provide good drainage; avoid persistently wet roots.
- Growth: A branching evergreen shrub in mild climates. Seasonal growth and flowering respond to warmth and available moisture.
- Wildlife: Spring flowers attract butterflies and add floral resources to native garden planting.
- Maintenance: Lightly shape after flowering and remove damaged stems. Preserve its natural branching habit rather than repeatedly shearing.
- Landscape uses: Sunny mixed borders, warm sheltered courtyards and large containers with drainage. Choose a protected site where winter temperatures rarely fall below about 25°F.
