Gambelia speciosa (syn. Galvezia speciosa)
An evergreen Channel Islands native with arching stems and vivid red, tubular flowers. Island Bush Snapdragon lends itself to relaxed coastal gardens, where its spreading growth can soften banks and garden edges.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Sun to part shade.
- Mature size: Often about 2–3 feet tall and 4 feet wide; established plants can spread substantially farther.
- Water & drought: Drought tolerant once established, with improved appearance from occasional supplemental water.
- Soil: Adaptable, including clay. Avoid an unnecessarily wet planting site.
- Growth: Arching and spreading, sometimes nearly prostrate near the coast; leave room rather than forcing a tight hedge.
- Pollinators & wildlife: Red tubular flowers are valued in hummingbird gardens; branches add cover within mixed habitat plantings.
- Maintenance: Selectively shorten stems after flowering and remove damaged growth. Frost may damage exposed growth.
- Uses: Coastal groundcover, hummingbird borders, banks and informal shrub plantings.
