Calamagrostis foliosa
A compact California coastal bunchgrass with arching blue-gray blades, sometimes purple-tinged. Spring flower heads mature from silvery purple to tawny, adding movement to small garden spaces.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Sun near the coast; provide some shade in warmer inland gardens.
- Mature size: Approximately 1–2 feet tall and wide.
- Water & drought: Occasional to moderate irrigation in cool coastal sites. Inland heat calls for more water and shade; avoid treating it as a desert grass.
- Soil: Good drainage is important. Avoid persistently saturated roots.
- Growth: Evergreen, cool-season bunchgrass, producing a low mound and spring flowering stems. Growth and longevity depend on heat and moisture.
- Habitat: Adds grass cover and seed-bearing stems; its wind-pollinated flowers do not offer floral nectar.
- Maintenance: Remove tired leaves and spent stems selectively. Divide or replace aging clumps if their appearance declines.
- Landscape uses: Coastal borders, meadow mixes, rock gardens, woodland edges and small groupings. Tolerates coastal wind and salt spray.
