Aristida purpurea
Purple-tinted seed heads give this native bunchgrass a light, moving texture. Purple Three-Awn suits open, dry landscapes where its clumping form and freely moving stems have space.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Full sun on the coast or inland.
- Mature size: About 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide.
- Water & drought: Low water once established; suited to dry slopes and shrubland-style planting.
- Soil: Adaptable to a range of soils; avoid unnecessary irrigation.
- Growth: Slow, clumping; winter dormancy can occur. Seedlings may spread beyond the original clump.
- Habitat: Useful in native meadow and songbird plantings, with butterfly and moth value.
- Maintenance: Monitor seedlings and selectively remove unwanted growth and old stems.
- Placement: Seed awns can be troublesome. Keep away from pets, children's play areas and busy paths.
- Uses: Dry meadows, open native borders and erosion-conscious slopes.
