Sea Cliff Buckwheat — Eriogonum parvifolium

Eriogonum parvifolium

A rounded coastal shrub with small leaves and clusters of cream-to-pink flowers through summer and fall. Sea Cliff Buckwheat is a useful habitat plant for Southern California coastal gardens.

Growing in Southern California

• Light: Sun near the coast; afternoon shade can help inland.
• Mature size: About 3 feet tall and wide.
• Water & drought: Low water once established in coastal conditions. Inland plants may need additional water and protection from afternoon heat.
• Soil: Adaptable; naturally associated with coastal sandy habitats. Match irrigation to drainage.
• Growth: Slow, rounded and evergreen.
• Pollinators & wildlife: Flowers support butterflies and other insects. This species is an important food plant for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly within its native range.
• Maintenance: Selectively remove dead or intrusive stems. Leave some flower and seed heads for habitat and seasonal texture.
• Uses: Coastal borders, habitat gardens, sunny banks and mixed native shrub plantings.
