Juncus effusus
Upright green stems give Soft Rush a clean vertical texture in moist gardens. This California native wetland species belongs in swales, pond margins and rain gardens where water gathers, rather than on an unirrigated dry slope.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Full sun to part shade.
- Mature size: About 1–3 feet tall and 1–2 feet wide per clump; clumps can spread over time.
- Water & drought: Maintain moist soil. Seasonal flooding is tolerated; this is a moisture-loving choice, not a dry-garden accent.
- Soil: Adaptable to wet soils, including sites with limited drainage.
- Growth: Moderate; upright, clumping and spreading.
- Habitat: Adds wetland structure and cover. Its small brownish flowers are subtle rather than a showy nectar display.
- Maintenance: Remove old brown stems selectively. Divide or contain expanding clumps where space is limited.
- Uses: Rain gardens, bioswales, pond edges, moist borders and watered containers.
