Aquilegia formosa
A California native perennial with delicate foliage and nodding red-and-yellow flowers. It brings woodland character and hummingbird interest to cool, lightly shaded garden spaces.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Part shade is a good choice locally. Sun is suitable in cooler coastal conditions; avoid hot afternoon exposures.
- Mature size: Foliage forms a mound around 1 foot tall; flower stalks reach 1–3 feet. Allow 1–2 feet of width.
- Water & drought: Moderate to regular moisture. Choose an irrigated woodland-style bed rather than an exposed, dry slope.
- Soil: Adaptable, including suitable clay, with moisture and drainage balanced.
- Growth: Seasonal perennial growth with spring–summer flowers; may produce volunteer seedlings when seed pods remain.
- Wildlife: Flowers attract hummingbirds; seed heads provide food for small birds.
- Maintenance: Remove spent stalks for a tidy appearance, or retain some for seed and birds. Clear deteriorated foliage as needed.
- Landscape uses: Woodland edges, moist meadow borders, sheltered containers and mixed shade planting.
