Polystichum munitum
A substantial evergreen native fern with upright, arching fronds for cool, shaded garden spaces. It adds year-round structure to woodland planting and sheltered courtyards.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Part shade to shade; protect from strong afternoon sun and drying heat.
- Mature size: Usually about 3 feet tall and wide, potentially 5 feet in cool, moist coastal conditions.
- Water & drought: Moderate irrigation supports attractive growth. Established plants tolerate some dryness in sheltered shade, but hot, exposed dry sites are unsuitable.
- Soil: Humus-rich soil with drainage is ideal; adaptable to other soils if moisture and aeration are suitable.
- Growth: Moderate, forming a lasting clump of evergreen fronds.
- Wildlife: Provides sheltered ground-level habitat. Ferns do not flower or supply floral nectar; they reproduce by spores.
- Maintenance: Remove damaged or aging fronds near the base without injuring new growth. Retain healthy fronds and keep mulch away from the crown.
- Landscape uses: Shaded borders, woodland gardens, sheltered walls and large-scale groundcover groupings.
Container note: 3/5 Gallon is a combined container range; the exact container is confirmed with your order.
