Clinopodium douglasii (syn. Satureja douglasii)
Yerba Buena is a fragrant, low native groundcover for sheltered shade. Its trailing stems and small green leaves soften woodland edges, shaded containers and the spaces around native shrubs.
Growing in Southern California
- Light: Shade to part shade; protect from hot inland afternoon sun.
- Mature size: Roughly 4–8 inches tall, spreading about 1–3 feet; easily kept smaller.
- Water & drought: Established plants tolerate some dryness in suitable shaded sites. Occasional supplemental moisture improves appearance in dry Southern California gardens.
- Soil: Adaptable to sand and clay; a sheltered woodland setting suits it.
- Growth: Creeping stems spread across the surface; generally easy to contain with selective trimming.
- Habitat: A low understory layer for diverse native woodland plantings, with small white flowers.
- Maintenance: Trim wandering stems and remove tired growth. Match irrigation to shade and soil moisture.
- Uses: Shaded groundcover, woodland borders, sheltered containers and fragrant accents near paths.
