Anemopsis californica
A spreading wetland perennial with broad green leaves and striking white flower bracts. Use it where garden moisture is available, including pond edges and irrigated habitat planting.
Southern California growing guide
- Light: Full sun to part shade.
- Mature size: Foliage generally under 1 foot; flowering stems may reach 1–2 feet. Colonies can spread 4–5 feet or farther.
- Water & drought: Regular to moderate water. This moisture-loving plant is unsuitable for an unirrigated dry slope.
- Soil: Adaptable to moist clay and alkaline or saline conditions. Unlike dry-garden natives, it tolerates wet ground.
- Growth: Spreads by aboveground runners during active growth. Leaves can disappear in fall or winter and return with warmer weather.
- Habitat: Adds living groundcover and seasonal flowers to wetland-style gardens.
- Maintenance: Remove dormant foliage and thin runners where needed; give colonies defined space.
- Landscape uses: Moist swales, pond margins and irrigated meadow planting. Match swales to actual soil moisture, since brief winter runoff alone may be insufficient.
